I don't know, Lane, should we be so circumspect about dog whistles? We know that people who espouse positions that are controversial frequently and deliberately speak in ways that convey their message in tones and words that can be taken in two different ways by different audiences. Sometimes, though, there can be no doubt. Was there really doubt about Reagan's intentions when he declared his candidacy in 1980 at Philadelphia? No, not Philadelphia, PA where Independence Hall sits, Philadelphia MS where three civil rights were notoriously murdered during "Freedom Summer" and at that point 16 years later none of them had been brought to justice even though everyone knew who they were. Was there serious doubt about what he was doing there, even though of course his supporters feigned innocence and said it was outrageous that anyone could suggest such a thing!

What did these supposedly "good people" believe they were doing when they were chanting "Jews will not replace us!" and "Blood and soil!"? What did Trump believe they were doing? Trump who according to his first wife Ivana kept a copy of Hitler's speeches beside his bed (cf businessinsider.com ).
