Kyle was being chased by men with guns who had also hurled a Molotov cocktail at him. Once he fell to the ground, one of them tried to bash him over the head with a skateboard and another tried to drop kick him in the head. Funny enough all three of the shooting victims had criminal records. Here is a film clip from a British source which clearly shows Kyle shooting one man (a sex offender) who was pointing a pistol at him.
