From personal experience developing for both HP Unix workstations and high-end NT Alpha/Pentium-based "workstations", I can say that the NT faction should definitely be considered workstations from the perspective of (1) speed, (2) storage capacity, (3) reliability, (4) RAM limits.

If I had to program a number-crunching application, I'd take an Alpha over a Sun workstation (at any set price). Note that most 3D graphics professionals are now moving towards NT platform (accelerating SGI demise).
