Clean TeQ Holdings (CLQ-T)

Late last year Shenzhen Stock Exchange listed battery manufacturer GEM Co. announced plans to construct, with its partners, the QMB New Energy battery materials project at its Morowali Industrial Park in Indonesia cleanteq.us14.list-manage.com, to produce intermediate nickel and cobalt products for refining to battery-grade nickel and cobalt sulphate in China. In a recent update to the stock exchange cleanteq.us14.list-manage.com GEM has announced that it has entered into a long term offtake contract to buy up to 22,320 tpa of nickel and 2,790 tpa of cobalt from a rival HPAL project on the island of Obi over eight years from 2021. Based on the report it appears that COVID is having a material impact on the delivery of new battery-grade nickel and cobalt projects in Indonesia.

According to reports, both the QMB and Obi Island projects have applied to the Indonesian authorities for approval to dispose of mine tailings directly into the ocean: cleanteq.us14.list-manage.com

With nickel use in batteries forecast to increase by approximately 1 million tonnes per annum by the end of the decade (with just over 100ktpa consumed today), project delays are likely to affect near-term market balances. Projects like Sunrise will become increasingly important for supplying sustainably mined nickel and cobalt to the global auto sector.
