Worswick: Kerala dry,no way are you kiddin',not as long as I can remember. They may have tried it as a social experiment, though.

I don't know you drink, and if you do,tried the famous Kerala 'Toddy'. It is a drink derived from Coconut Palms mainly and another kind of palm tree, but mostly Coconut Palms. In case you want to know how here is the modus operandi. Before the tree starts flowering, the flower buds sprouts out within a foot and half long 'cone'.Someone has to climb the tree and beat the hell out (gently) of the cone for some 20 min or so,with a deer bone. Then you neatly chop the top of the cone in an oblique fashion and put a large clay pot on top of it and leave it there for a day or so.The next day you climb back and collect the pot with a few liters of liquid Toddy, which is of an off- white hue. If one drinks it right away, it will have mild sweet taste and no alcohol, but if you keep it a few days it ferments and turns into an alcoholic drink. You would consume it like beer, have couple of three glasses then you will be a happy man, have a few spicy sauteed prawn or chicken- masala or something you talking hog-heaven.

you don't find them in fancy hotels or bars, they are exclusively served in government approved 'Toddy shops' which is normally a thatched hut with some benches and desk. You find them mostly in rural areas.
