Christine:

Regarding your question about "Indians" . . .

If you go back far enough, "Indians" were Northern European or Asian. The Europeans settled in the Northeast and along the eastern coast of North America; the Asians crossed the Siberian-Alaskan landbridge and settled the far North to as far south as South America - Eskimo to Aztec, Mayan and Incan.

Their cultures were based on mysticism, while the Western Europeans leaned towards Rationalism (led by Science and Technology), although the Europeans were still tainted by mystical ideas and underpinnings.

A superior culture can be defined as one that comprehends the reality of the natural world to the point where a cognitive mind can use observations to create new things that never existed before. "Indians were very weak in this key area. They tended to attribute natural phenomena to spirits, ergo they cut themselves off from the ability to interpret and apply the natural principles governing nature to create a higher level of understanding leading to a higher level of technology. Their understanding of nature was little better than Stone Age Man's. While the Western cultures adopted nature's principles to create machines specifically designed to accomplish certain tasks, the "Indians" prayed to spirit-gods and danced - to no avail.

Since the Earth will not last forever - and we saw how the most successful species in history (one that was in the early stages of developing a higher consciousness, self-awareness and cognitive skills, the dinosaurs), were wiped out by a random asteroid impact - I would say a truly superior culture is one that is moving towards the capability of choosing its own destiny in the Universe. Implicit in this goal is the ability to emigrate from Earth to other planets around other star systems. On this point mystical-animist cultures fail.
