Thread, H&Q issued a STRONG BUY on Cisco this morning (1/29). Below are sumaries: ______ 1. US West and Cisco Systems today announced they have signed a strategic alliance agreement. US West has designated Cisco as its strategic vendor for data network infrastructure. 2. We (H&Q) believe that this is for what is called "out of region Network". This consist of the region outside of the 14 states that US West currently covers. The plan is to install wide-area network ATM switches in over 80 points of presence (POPs) around the United States by the end of 1998. 3. We believe that today's announcement is one element of strategic relationship. We expect that the two companies will create applications and solutions for the consumer market and for sectors not traditionally touched. 4. This announcement could have an impact on Newbridge, Currently, NN is used for the "in region" US West network. While we believe US West has no immediate plans to change the status quo of this relationship with NN, there is clearly some threat from Cisco to NN in the longer run (Go get 'em Cisco kid! -- Ibexx ed.) 5. We view this alliance positively for Cisco. It is is a key win for Cisco. Its satatus as a total solution provider has clearly helped it in this situation.
