Ken, I found YT irritating with all the ads of various styles interrupting the viewing, that's why after about 7-8 years, I subbed to Premium at $12.00 a month.
But as regard to content, use the search box for topics of interest. Since there are about 300 million videos that YT hosts currently, there are topics of interest to suit any fancy at all. Very many are created by amateurs, some with remarkable talent. Take that into account for your expectations. Part of my fun are the surprises in the recommended list (which appears to the right of, or under, the current video). There is an algorithm that analyzes your interests and tailors the recommendations to similar ones and other random ones.
And I'm pretty sure there is no porn on the site, but I'm sure users do slip in what they can get away with. You're likely not ever to see anything salacious appear in your recommended lists if you've never hunted for that sort of thing.
You can find lectures by university professors on every topic conceivable, sermons by preachers of every denomination, audiobook readings, music videos, debates on all kinds of topics, channels by large media outlets like ABC, History, Science channels, Nat. Geo., BBC, Comedy Central. News and weather channels too with usually short breaking news stories. There are Sci-Fi channels with original award-winning short movies created for YT. Sports events of any kind both current and classic. There are home filmed dog and cat videos, animal rescue, animal care, etc.
There are how-to videos on every skill conceivable, math courses, guitar, flute, piano, courses, cooking, language learning, product reviews by users, car mechanics, beekeepers, landscapers, concrete layers, drywallers, carpenters, electricians, hornet killers.
Top ten lists on all kinds of subjects, relaxation videos, doctor's and other health videos. You can follow builders of houses, boats, cars, or restorers of old damaged items, throughout their entire projects. Private jet flyers, over-the-road video travelogues, drone-flight footage, video game players as they work through a game. There are free movies hosted by YT and for-pay movies.
However, there are many copyright violaters who don't own the right to upload what they do. I check out the channel name, and avoid those that are obviously not the owner.
That's just what I can think of off the top of my head. And, on top of that, you can upload videos you create yourself, if you ever had a mind to. They make that process easy. |
