I watched a Youtube video where Morita talked about his mentor Redd Foxx. I guess Morita started out as a stand up. He called himself "The Hip Nip"

His wife was pregnant and he needed $7000 for the down payment on a house. He cautiously approached Foxx. Foxx pulled out his check book and wrote him a check.

Then he told him don't even think of paying me back. After you make it help someone else like I just helped you.
