RS: I do not happen to think that this situation adds credability to the" multicomponent argument" nor does anyone else that i have talked too. It asctually does just the opposite.
Here are comments from the referenced article :
<<<<"Dr.Schellekens said the mutation changes one of the amino acids in
pertactin, a protein the bacterium carries on its surface. It tricks the
human immune system that has been primed by the vaccine to recognize
normal strains of the Bordetela pertussis.

The likelihood of the mutant strain of the disease spreading across the
continent will depend on which type of vaccine a country uses.

The whole cell vaccine used by the Dutch has been ineffective. But other
vaccines in England and Finland which give immunity to pertactin and
other proteins will help sufferers fight the disease.

"In such cases the mutation may cause a smaller or later epidemic," said
Schellekens. >>>>>>>
Now here Dr Schellekens is in effect stating that the efficacy of the multicomponent vaccines will be less because of the mutation in the pertactin component. How much is an unknown. In the wholecell it was really bad.
Now if a pertussis vaccine sets up the bodies immune system to be triggered by the pertussis bacterium only it won't be affected by the mutation of the pertactin.
The question that I don't think has an answer yet is does the mutation in the pertactin trick an immune system set up by a multicomponent vaccine into not recognizing the pertussis bacterium? That is what happens in the wholecell. Dr. Schellekens says the multicomponent vaccines "may" cause a smaller or later epidemic".
For now they are his only alternative. Note: We aren't hearing anything like this coming out of Sweden or Denmark and probably never will. At least not were CERTIVA is being used. CERTIVA is the next generation vaccine IMO.
Anyway you look at it this news does not bode well for any pertussis vaccine that has a pertectin component.
