The first election debate leaves a lasting impression on most voters, especially in regard to the challenger. This often has little to do with substance, but with showing if the challenger is strong enough and competent enough as he stands side by side with the President. Markets, of course, are interested in substance. For example, Biden is open to another lockdown if the virus makes a strong resurgence. Trump, of course, is open to pursuing a "herd immunity strategy." And there is, of course, the China issue. How to deal with China? And there are the questions of taxes, healthcare, infrastructure, technology, climate change, etc.

The public already knows what Trump is all about. They have seen him in action for 4 years. The election debates are primarily a forum for the challenger. If Biden passes the test, your boy is dead in the water and a Democratic big time sweep is coming. To Joe 6 Pack, passing primarily means addressing his concerns and coming across as strong, but gentle and compassionate, in contrast to Trump.
