I love tequila's and mescal.

The expensive tequila is aged in barrels, sometimes charred barrels, where it loses much of the volatile compounds. It's best for shooters where that flavor can be overwhelming.

For a mixed drink nothing beats the unaged (or aged in the bottle) clear tequilas. Without the "raw" flavor you might as well mix the drink with vodka. Margaritas are a complex cocktail of tequila, brandy, lime, orange-liquor, simple sugar, and salt. It takes skill and more time to mix than many cocktails. Most margaritas are made with a god-awful bottled mix and it's no wonder they have a bad reputation. My personal favorite cocktail is a tequila-sunrise made with the slightly sour fresh orange juice you find around the caribbean (or in some mexican markets) and use actual grenadine, not that POM juice .
