I usually make a variation of the el Presidente margarita. The key is to not use any sweet-sour mix. Instead squeeze fresh limes and add simple sugar then taste it. Squeeze the limes hard so that some of the oils from the peel are released, that adds a little bitter to counter the sour. I often add a touch of lemon juice and salt. keep tasting it until it is something you would be willing to drink on it;'s own. We usually make a pitcher since it's easier to get the blends right in larger quantities. My goto orange liquor is Grand Marnier. Sometimes we add a bit of everclear.
