Actually, on a world production basis, 1% of pipes are found to be economocal or should I say profitable. Debeer's states that it takes on average 250 tonnes of material to be moved to produce one carat of diamond in finished form.

For interest:

616 ct is worlds largest uncut diamond
273 ct worlds largest flawless cut diamond
only about 600 rough crystals which can produce a 1-2 ct "D" flawless finished stone are mined per year world wide
