I understand all that, you're just saying the same thing over and over. I get that those ratios don't show pure value; they show different aspects of value relative to price. They're indicators as to whether the present price (which may vary wildly with the mood swings of Mr Market) is low or high.
Buffett looks at RoC to. Anyone would, reasonably. And then you can relate the price to that, and other stuff.

In Greenblatt's words: "Prices fluctuate more than values – so therein lies opportunity"

You don't really explaing why it is a problem that "the majority of those ratios rely on a number that varies over SHORT PERIODS of time" in a meaningful way. I mean, that is obvious?

I think it is you who are misunderstanding, or you are explaining poorly. Also, you read like you are screaming. Diplomacy isn't really a strong point with you either, is it, bruwin...?
