214,629 deaths/ 7,638,596 cases =2.80979% death rate.
That's among the confirmed cases. The death rates being reported assume that there are a lot of undetected, asymptomatic cases of COVID-19.

I posted a while back explaining why even a death rate of 0.64% would be catastrophic: Message 32843720

People don't understand why a virus that has a 0.64% death rate can be MORE deadly than a virus that has a 50% death rate.

P.S. - I find it hilarious that some people would take certain things from the CDC as gospel but not other things like mask-wearing.
