ADVISORY/President Clinton Announces High-Tech Drug Interdiction Initiative in State of the Union Address
INTERVIEW AVAILABILITY: SECURITY TECHNOLOGY EXPERT RALPH SHERIDAN
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 1998-- President Clinton outlined a major initiative to virtually eliminate drug smuggling along the U.S.-Mexico border in last night's State of the Union address.
To achieve this goal, the President emphasized a commitment to purchasing and deploying advanced security technologies.
The U.S. Customs Service has already begun installing advanced x-ray equipment called CargoSearch(TM) at check points along the U.S./Mexican border. Developed by American Science and Engineering (AMEX: ASE - news) of Billerica, Mass., CargoSearch(TM) enables Customs Inspectors to inspect cargo trucks in a matter of minutes rather than hours.
The equipment uses a proprietary Z(R)Backscatter x-ray technology that can detect low-density, organic materials, such as drugs and explosives, in sealed containers. CargoSearch(TM) also meets Clinton's criteria that drug interdiction efforts not interfere with ''legal commerce and movement that makes us the trade leader of the world.''
Using CargoSearch(TM), U.S. Customs Inspectors can screen an entire tractor-trailer truck in 8-10 minutes. The systems can also be configured to inspect air, rail, sea, and palletized cargo containers.
INTERVIEW AVAILABILITY:
Ralph Sheridan, president of AS&E, is available to discuss the use of advanced technology in the U.S. drug control strategy along the Mexican border, including CargoSearch(TM), the Z(R)Backscatter x-ray technology . |
