Low level waste isn't that dangerous, high level waste is a relatively small part of the waste produced. Some of the most intense waste also has short half lives and isn't a very long term issue.

Which isn't to say that waste isn't a problem just that too much can be made of the issue. Other forms of power produce waste products as well.

I don't think waste is the biggest issue holding back nuclear power. Cost and politics are what's holding back nuclear power more than anything else. Nuclear plants are very expensive to build. And in some places they are being deactivated and not replaced because of political opposition to nuclear energy. I guess waste issues cause part of that political opposition.
