Well, it was an excerpt from the NYT article, without any editing on my part. I would've used the equity, with a suitable haircut for used airplanes, frequent flier clubs and other stuff. FWIW, when I value a company that I am considering buying shares in, I pay little attention to the EV. I consider a boatload of debt to be a detriment to its value. I'm not buying out the whole thing, so it's certainly not additive to the price I'd be willing to pay. Either way, the point still stands; the airlines would be up a creek, were it not for their customers' fetish for miles.
