The popcorn effect

What is the popcorn effect? The brokers uniformly believed that, despite
any improvement in the price of gold, the junior exploration was not going
to improve across the board. Rather, a few select juniors with fundamental
success to report would "pop" in price and benefit from better than
expected price appreciation as junior gold investors flock to them. The
best analogy used by one of the brokers was that current investors
represent mosquitoes (no derogatory comparison intended) in the woods. Up
until early '97, there were many light bulbs which attracted them. In
1998, there will be very few light bulbs but when they turn on, they will
attract their disproportionate share of mosquitoes, thus driving prices up
faster.
