Wharfie, It means making enuf on any job with a 40 hour work week to buy food, shelter with utilities, health care, clothes at a thrift shop, free K-12 ed, with extensions on both ends that we can fight over, transportation to the job, and an Obamaphone.. That's the thing. "Any job" that doesn't produce enough to support all of that should not exist, according to you leftists.
Let's say a dishwashing job at the local restaurant is worth $10/hour, according to the business owner. Other competing restaurants pay that much, and there are plenty of people who are willing to work at that rate.
Hence the market has decided that the value of dishwashers is $10/hour.
Enter the socialists who say, "No no no, you have to pay your dishwashers $15/hour, because we say so. Besides, think of the poor single mom over there washing dishes just so she can support her two kids."
The restaurant owners who operate on thin margins can't simply pay that higher rate out of pocket. They'll have to raise prices on their own food, which makes people want to eat out less. Or they'll have to let some of their workers go. Or they'll have to cut hours. Usually it's a combination of all three.
And what do the socialists say in response to that? "GFY, you business owners. You were literally employing wage slaves."
That's how the minimum wage kills jobs. And the socialists justify the jobs lost by saying, "Well those jobs shouldn't have existed in the first place."
