The Vancouver Sun reports in a lead front
page story in its Thursday edition that
witnesses who will testify against financier
Rakesh Saxena, wanted in Thailand for his role
in a sweeping embezzlement scheme, are
under RCMP protection until his bail hearing
on February 9. Reporter Ian Mulgrew says that
in Thailand, repercussions of the scandal that
broke 18 months ago continue to reverberate
as a senior finance ministry official was
reassigned following charges he accepted
kickbacks from the government. Mr Mulgrew
makes no mention of Mr Saxena's role in the
downfall of numerous Thai officials, including
the country's head banker and the government,
more than a year ago. Mr Mulgrew says that
his investigation, confirmed by subsequent
RCMP detective work, revealed that Mr
Saxena tried to obtain a false passport and
allegedly threatened to kill a witness. His
former bodyguards, who are trained killers, are
under protection after alleged threats.
