Merrill Lynch & Co. lowered its estimate for semiconductor equipment growth in 1998, citing declines in spending by Korean, Taiwanese and
Japanese chip companies. In a morning research note, Merrill Lynch analyst Robert Stern wrote that the industry would show zero-to-5% growth in
1998, down from an earlier projection of 5% to 10% growth. However, Stern increased his spending estimates for American chip companies to 15%
to 20% from 10% to 15%, based on recent projections by some semiconductor manufacturers. But he wrote that the American chip companies
could lower that rate due to lower revenues during the year. (Dow Jones)
