You don't have to keep it connected all the time. It only needs to be attached when the backup program is running, say over the night.

Use Windows backup to do a full system backup once every 3 months.

Set up incremental backup every night. That will back up only the files that have changed since the last back up.

If there are important working folders that you want backed up all the time, set up a third backup schedule only for those folders and make sure to specify how many versions you want backed up. They can be backed up to your Google drive or to another folder on your computer.

Finally, remember to delete the old backups that you don't want once a year or so.
