Yes, and I would add, what is really going with this "tribalism" is the increasing bifurcation of the human species political and philosophical ideology based on an increased understanding. As we have evolved dramatically over the last 100 years, and have seen an increasing sensitivity and empathy of humans between and for other people and especially how to help the needy we have put a point on our differences. We have been making headway into the problems Charles Dickens wrote about. And Liberals and conservatives have totally different perspectives on our cultures norms and mores. I think this has been highlighted based on our better understanding of each other. When the internet came along it really put our understanding of each other on steroids. Who posts on SI is a perfect example of our increasing understanding of each other. When the internet first started out conservatives and liberals often comingled. Even on SI we were much more homogeneous 20 odd years ago and today we are totally divided. I think the reason for this is that in the days before the internet, we could not read each others thoughts very well e.g. especially when on was quiet. So what a person believed was sort of amorphous to all of us. But when the internet came along and we would read specifically what each other thought we divided ourselves up. It takes us back to the superiority of the written word over the spoken word. Democrats do not go on Republican threads and vice versus. Heck, epicure doesn't even wait around, she tells right wingers in bold letters to stay away-lol. And as you well know we used to have liberal and conservative Democrats and now they are totally two distinct populations with no overlap at the tails of the normal distribution, at all! I expect this to persist as it is sort of based on the science knowing. Beto said he expects Texas to do well and it will be because of the women and especially the women of color. The classic "highly qualified but unacceptable". Reps claim that broke the consensus that each side would confirm "qualified" candidates regardless of philosophy.
