Interesting announcement - seems like they want anything but an American standard.

Europe Adopts Mobile-Phone Std Based On NTT DoCoMo Design
PARIS (Nikkei)-Europe's telecommunications industry Thursday voted to adopt a single continent-wide standard for its next-generation cellular phone system, industry sources said.

The unified system is based on one developed by NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) and also partly incorporates technology proposed by German and French telecom companies.

The hybrid standard will enable callers to use their cellular phones in Japan, Europe and Asia.

The new regulations for cellular phone services, expected to take effect in the early 21st century, were adopted at a meeting of the European Telecommunications Standard Institute in Paris. ETSI is a European organization of telecom companies and communications equipment makers.

In response to the group's decision, NTT DoCoMo will also modify its system to achieve a common standard with Europe.

In contrast to Japan and Europe, North American countries will likely allow several different types of phone systems to compete with each other.
