Penni, can I be "smarty pants" s'more? I'm going to try this completely from memory: Mescal and mescaline ~ Mescaline is derived from a little "buddy" cactus, Lophophora williamsii, which grows in some smaller areas of our Southwest on down into Mexico. It's the Native American Church's peyote. [For some insane reason, illegal for traditional church members in Oregon, thanks to an attorney general with $250,000.00 and time on his hands to worry about a few remote ceremonies.] Mescaline is an expensive, fairly rare, extract or derivative (or ask Alex). Or maybe, yah, no, ~ it's the synthesized psychoactive. Hey, this is pretty darn advanced techno-stuff, but I think that means you can start with no cacti and still get the goodies in the lab. This product opened Aldous Huxley's Doors of Perception, but hey, we all knew that already. (Real pants can tell you what Chrome Yellow was about.)
Mescal is a drink, a pulpy, freshly fermenting gooey creepy warm goulash you can apparently develop a taste for in the pursuit of buzz. It's Mexican and comes from a big cactus type plant, with base-radiating long laterally-spiny flat leaves Agave ifogetthesecondpartii. It's mildly alcoholic, but they distill the same plant into tequila for us choosies. I think. Could be a different plant. Or drink.
Now I'm gonna go check this to see how I done. Well, if I get the energy, otherwise we'll just let it stand til some real smarty-pants comes along.
BTW, never had either one (and neither has Bill).
PS ~ Agave attenuata has stripes down the edges of the leaves. There. That makes up for not knowing the other one. Lots of agaves to remember, ya know. |
