You really need to know what you own but that's why I am here I'm not sure that's true. In my Roth account I have a few large positions that I know really well, Then I have maybe 40 smaller 0.5% positions, which I definitely do not know well. I just sort of like to diversify, and then hopefully let them sit there forever. My Roth account does OK. The key for me is getting the big bets right, the smaller bets arent going to move the needle even if they do well or poorl. UNFI was one of those, but going up 150% was a nice unexpected move. What little I know about it it sounds pretty good, but I haven't done a deep dive. Who has time for 40 deep dives on 40 different 0.5% positions?
