Compaq, Canon Sales tie up on PC sales in Japan
TOKYO, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp (CPQ - news) of the United States and Canon Sales Co Inc (8060.T) of Japan announced on Friday that they have agreed on a tie-up on sales and marketing of Compaq's consumer personal computers in Japan.
The companies said in a joint statement the planned tie-up would be the industry's first between a foreign computer maker and a major Japanese computer sales company which also covers exclusive sales rights.
Canon Sales is the sole distributor of all products of Canon Inc (Nasdaq:CANNY - news; 7751.T), a top manufacturer of cameras, printers and photocopiers, in the Japanese domestic market.
Compaq and its Japanese subsidiary, and Canon Sales would start their business cooperation on Compaq's new ''Presario'' consumer personal computer series, to be launched in Japan this spring, the statement said.
Under the tie-up agreement, Canon Sales obtains exclusive sales rights to the series and joins in planning and marketing of the product for the Japanese market.
The tie-up agreement was possible as it suited both firms, the statement said.
Compaq wanted to strengthen its consumer PC business in the Japanese market and Canon Sales wanted a new pillar for its PC business.
Industry data shows that Japan's huge 1.3 trillion yen corporate computer market, comprising servers, workstations and mainframe computers, is dominated by big Japanese makers.
