We were supposed to travel to Milan in mid-March. Cancelled, of course, once they started with a major breakout in late February.

NY (and some surrounding areas) would have had half the fatalities, had they refrained from sending infected patients to nursing homes. By then, it was known that old people are at an increased risk.

Much is not known about the early stages of the epidemic in the US. There were large numbers of stories about people presenting to ER’s with viral pneumonias - and were negative for flu. With testing for CoViD being virtually nonexistent, we didn’t know that we were having a major event on our hands.

We have friends, an elderly couple in their early 80’s. Both developed “bad colds” on a transatlantic cruise from Rome to Fort Lauderdale - last November. The lady had it worse - she was coughing and felt quite sick for some 5 weeks. As soon as serology testing became available, they got tested - and both had antibodies.

Go figure.
