know if recycling paid for itself to the degree that it would save us money to recycle, the trash collector told us: "it costs more to run two trucks than one".

In the early 90's the town we lived in sent their trash to an incinerator which generated electricity. We were contracted to provide a minimum number of tons/month. When state mandated recycling came into effect the town fell below its quota and had to buy trash from a neighboring town for the incinerator. It was very expensive recycling for a few years.
