I too see Gold as a symbol for God in the same way you do. I see
the book of Job differently. I see it as one of the most loving books in
Old Testament. I see it as a message from the sages
as how to live life amid all the suffering that goes on but also as
a way to get rid of a lot of the suffering.
The book asks what wisdom is-. it says fear of God and understanding
is shown through avoiding evil(I interpret that to mean ones own actions and also
staying away from people who do evil). If people believed this, the world would be
empty of evil ..and people would become as pure as gold.
By fearing God, they would gain consciousness that just maybe they will be held responsible for the consequences of their actions and not assume that they can get away with anything.(reminds me of little children who fear parents when they are around and then do their thing when the parents are absent.) The point is that if there is the great unknown, the great unknown is never absent.
Job was cursed by his "sense of righteousness"..in a sense he was putting himself on the same level as God..he assumed he knew the unknowable..he assumed he knew the force that could cause tidal waves and earthquakes ..his experiences taught him to be humble and to not question. As a result, a huge burden was removed from his shoulder and once again he became the child with the omniscient unknown. He no longer tried to control the "uncontrollable", and simply resumed his life as a God fearing man who avoided evil. He had never wavered from that path..never cursed out God..even with all his compound misfortunes. There is always reference to that throughout the book. "His friends" were the people that were always pointing the finger and again never doing self reflection on how they conducted
their own lives."his friends" to me are symbolic of the why most humans think. They blamed Job for his misfortunes as a way to escape that possibly misfortunes could befall them..they were not his friends..they were not supportive but accusatory..
In the end, when Job's huge burden of self righteousness was removed
and he became the child again, all his fortunes were returned and then
some. He let go..
In the I Ching, Book of Chinese wisdom, hexagram 51 contains a similar
message of fearing the great unknown..examining ones own behavior and
then being liberated from all earthly terrors...laughter and merriment
can follow.
To me Book of Job is incredibly liberating and shows possibly the loving nature
of the great unknowable..
