All Companies play charades with IDC to manipulate the numbers. Wink oncem its lower, twice and the number goes up. (I used to be WS Marketing manager for HP.) They certainly do NOT pay for them. IDC gets the numbers by modeling ISV license count data, among other areas. I bet HP sold less than 90,000 workstation last year. Their NT strategy, while sound, has hurt their UNIX ws business in the interim period as everyone waits for NT to become more robust.

For SUN, they are the only full-line Company with a serious commitment to UNIX. This will certanly help in the 1-3 year period, but after that, I'd be worried. In the meantime, SUN will do very well.
