Aside from not physically removing northeast democrat governors, who all have a 7% death rate, he has done everything right. The rest of the country has a 2% death rate, which is lower than almost all the civilized countries outside Asia/pac.
America is still above every county in Europe when it comes to deaths per capita, except for Spain and Belgium.

America is also way above every country in Europe when it comes to total number of cases per capita.

The lower "death rate" is because most of America's cases occurred during the summer whereas most of Europe's cases occurred from March to June, back when we still didn't know how to deal with COVID-19 patients.

But even lower "death rates" matter little when the number of cases is through the roof. Take the UK, for example. They used to have a "death rate" of 10%, and it lingered there for a while because most of their cases at the time occurred from March to June.

But the UK didn't see that many new cases over the summer. Only now are they experiencing a resurgence. But their death toll is far lower than it used to be:
