Canada Population: increases immigration targets to historic levels following COVID-19 disruptions Canada will seek to admit 401,000 new permanent residents next year, a target that if met would be a historic number of newcomers, to bolster the economy and fill jobs in sectors experiencing shortages after the COVID-19 pandemic led to closed borders and a sharp slowdown in new arrivals. Canadian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino unveiled the government's latest immigration targets on Friday in a report tabled to Parliament. Speaking to reporters afterwards, Mendicino stressed the importance of immigration in maintaining Canada's economy and international economic advantage. Between 2021 and 2023, the goal is to admit upwards of 1.2 million new permanent residents. Altogether, the target figures represent a marked increase in three-year plans unveiled last March, when the government said it was aiming for just over one million people by 2022. Mendicino was asked if his government's recently-tabled plan for immigration would lead to fewer jobs. The minister responded by saying that one-in-three jobs in Canada today was created by an immigrant.
