>> Windows NT Workstations Outsell Unix Machines for First Time Ever <<
>> The company said that in 1997, 1.3 million workstations were sold equipped with NT, compared with 660,000 units with Unix. In addition, NT shipments increased more than 80%, compared with a 7% decline for Unix. <<
1,300,000 / 1.8 = 722,222 NT workstations sold in previous year. 660,000 / .93 = 709,677 Unix workstations sold in previous year.
Unless my math is wrong, or their math is wrong this is the second year that NT has sold more than Unix.
I have seen 10 or more NT workstations doing the job that one expensive Unix box could do. Still the threat is very real.
I think it's funny how every quarter, or so, there is this big NT (and whatever else) scare, and everyone says Unix is dead, and yet Sun continues to show great prospects. I will go ahead and predict that this isn't the last "scary" story we will hear in the next few weeks.
