Japan eyes stable supply network for rare earthsThe Japanese government will subsidize a pilot program for refining rare earth metals in India. It is part of the country's efforts to secure a stable supply network in the Indo-Pacific region for the precious metals.

Trading company Toyota Tsusho will conduct the roughly five-year initiative to study possible technical problems and financial feasibility. The project will involve rare earths imported from countries including Australia.

Rare earths are essential for the production of high-tech products. For example, they are used to make precision components for home appliances. Demand for the metals is likely to increase in coming years, partly because the use of electric vehicles is expected to become more prevalent.

Japan currently relies on imports from China for around 60 percent of its domestic supply. It also depends on facilities in China to refine all the rare earths it obtains.

China is one of the world's biggest producers of rare earths. The country has hinted at limiting exports to the United States as a retaliatory measure amid bilateral trade tensions.
