This koan demonstrates a lack of illumination that is profound.
It shows how a great wind carries little of value but much refuse and litter.
It paints an image of an uncontrolled tongue just flapping away in that wind.
A little tiny spot of light that could easily could be missed if it wasn't so dark.


As a rule any koan can be further illuminated by a few lines that hint at it's shape.
In and of themselves koans have no power, they are ordinary statements.
They only achieve potency when they can be seen against a live backdrop.
This koan works because it arises from simplicity, need and confusion.
