There are two important things that the US can learn from Canada:

(1) Get rid of gerrymandering. Entrenched interests in both parties love it b/c it brings them job security without having to work for it. Redistricting should be done by a non-partisan panel that has representatives from both parties but is really there to enforce established guidelines based on what makes sent.

(2) Sever the connection between the state and national versions of the parties. In Canada it is very common for people to vote for one party, say conservative, on a provincial (state) level and another party, say liberal, on the federal level. Putting firewalls between state and federal parties ensures that each chapter of the party remains true to the mandate and does the job they are supposed to do without dragging the other side into their mess.

A side effect of the above is that nobody has to register for any specific party to participate.
