OK let me throw out a question and see if anyone here is knowledgeable. As usual, it involved SIMO.

The question is on disk drive makers. The industry is consolidated down to two companies, WDC and STX. They make disk drives.

MRVL makes controllers for disk drives. I dont know who if anyone else makes disk drive controllers.

Do WDC and STX also make their own proprietary internal disk drive controllers? Any idea of the split? Any idea why they don't make them all internally, and why the purchase some from MRVL?

I'm curious about SIMO and their SSD controller product line. All the NAND makers make SSD controllers internally. Samsung makes (I think) 100% of their NAND controllers internally, and the rest of the industry splits between some internal and some external (from SIMO and Phison).

I'm wondering if the trends in disk drive controllers can tell us what will happen with SSD controllers over time. Will it head toward 100% internal controller development and consumption, 100% merchant consumption, or some mix in the middle?

If anyone has deep knowledge of how disk drive controllers progressed over time, and why, I'd love to read any thoughts on how that may affect SSD controller development trends - merchant versus internal.
