Java On Merced? zdnet.com

This is some recent news on the cozying up of the last few months between Sun and Intel. A bunch of talk about whose compiler to use. I note it just for the random swipe at the end.

Said one attendee of the NDA workshop who requested anonymity, when asked how difficult it would be to move existing 32-bit apps to 64-bit NT, said: "If you wrote your application the way Microsoft dreamed up last week, maybe you won't need to rewrite your app. Otherwise, you will." But he did note that Microsoft is talking about providing with 64-bit NT some kind of sandbox that will allow you to run "messy" applications in a special environment-but only as long as they aren't larger than 32-bits.

Merced +NT6 - Be afraid. Be very afraid. We've heard that one before. Of course, in the tradition of standard Microsoft business practice, this isn't a problem, it's an opportunity. Whatever the final model is, you can be sure Microsoft apps will be written to that model before anyone else's.

Cheers, Dan.
