"So you want me to believe this vaccine will protect against covid strains that haven't even mutated yet?"

The science right now is leaning towards long term immunity from a vaccine as the most likely outcome, but they readily also readily admit that the only way to tell for sure is in hindsight. The mutations so far with Covid are differ from flu and common cold mutations. Key parts of covid have stayed close enough to the same...namely the spikes...to give hope on long lasting protection. Covid in this sense is more comparable/similar to SARS than to the flu or the common cold. Thus the full name: SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). And long term resistant to SARS after infection as been decisively proven...at least 8 years. And SARS resistance has been proven to give some resistance to COVID19! SARS T-Cells are awaken by COVID-19.

Now will they get a vaccine out soon enough to make a difference? Maybe for some countries that controlled the spread and still have vast numbers of susceptible people, but I suspect it will be a moot point in the US where the virus running almost unchecked.
