Big dogs
or
The importance of control

If you own a big dog you have a good idea of how strong they can be, they are stronger.
When instinct kicks in a dog owner can be surprised and overwhelmed.
Your hand goes through that loop to grasp the leash below the loop.
For smaller dogs it may not matter but for your large dog, it could be life saving.

My Finnegan is immensely powerful and I know this.
In the summer we sometimes swim in the South Saskatchewan River.
Finn and Ana and Sweetie would all come in to the water.
I would wade out deeper and the current increased a lot, at thigh deep Finn could stay with me.
He could swim against the current while Ana and Sweetie were both washed downstream.
While they were on a one way trip he could actually swim a circle around me, whining.
He really hates to have me in a place he considers dangerous, like the river.
I almost gave Finn back because of his aggressive nature.
I decided to keep him because I was certain he would fail a temperament test and be destroyed
He is very protective and gets involved, he doesn't stand back.
This tragedy is an instruction for all who can heed the warning, it made me cry thinking it could be my Finn.

Make sure you are always well tethered to your big dog. Expect the unexpected
My heart goes out to the owner and the policeman who had to make such a difficult decision.
I made my children well aware of the fact that the lives of our dogs were in our hands.
Closing the gates to the kennel and the yard is protection, they depend on us. This is such a sad tale.
I am sure this dog thought he was doing the right thing, tensions must have been very high.
I am sure the owner had no idea of what was going to happen as he as walking along that day.
