Two Different "Meters"

Disregard my previous post on the differences between the Colormate III and the BiliCheck. After doing more research I found a less complex way of describing the differences (at least, a little less complex).

Chromatics' device is described as a "colorimeter".
Spectrx's device is described as a "spectrophotometer"

CCSI

From techstocks.com - 510K from FDA:

The Colormate III like other colorimeters, generates a set of tristimulus color coordinates for each measurement. It then performs a series of algorithms to produce final measurement results.

From ziggy.derby.ac.uk :

Colorimeter: An instrument for measuring colorimetric quantities by means of a set of colour filters simulating the CIE colour matching functions.

From ziggy.derby.ac.uk :

CIE colour matching functions: A system for determining the tristimulus values of any spectral power distribution using the set of reference red, green and blue lights and the three colour matching functions adopted by the CIE in 1964.

Spectrx

From mscsports.com :

The system is being developed by SpectRx, Inc. A device called a spectrophotometer is placed against the skin. The device emits a white light, which is reflected back by the skin. A computer then analyzes the reflected light, breaking down the reflection into a spectrum of light. After accounting for the skin thickness (based on the gestational age of the baby), the skin color, and skin vascularity, the computer uses the information to determine the levels of bilirubin in the blood

From ziggy.derby.ac.uk :

Spectrophotometer: An instrument for measuring the ratio of two values of a radiometric quantity at the same wavelength. Normally, one of these values represents the sample and the other a reference white.
========

The FDA has approved the Colormate III using colorimetric measurement. FDA approval gives major crediblity in the global marketplace as to the accuracy / reliability of the device.

Spectrx's device, the Bilicheck, being a spectrophotometer, has not been approved by the FDA, thus it simply does not have the credibility / approval needed to be well received in the medical community.

I agree with Darby's statement that unless or until Spectrx attains FDA approval they are not considered real competition.
