Re: "How does converting a line from logic to memory provide potential backup CPU production capacity?"

A few posts back I asked Paul Engel about a potential production capacity squeeze once the Merced comes on line. He said (please correct me if I'm mis-quoting you, Paul) that initially the Merced ramp will be slow, but there may be potential for a squeeze once it hits full production.

Apparently Intel has sufficient 0.25 micron CPU production capacity for now, otherwise why should they convert one of their 0.25 micron CPU fabs to flash. In the future, though, when there is potential for a squeeze (especially if the DEC deal doesn't go through), this fab should be able to be converted back to CPU production with relative ease.
