Analyst bullish on Internet telephony

Making telephone calls on the Internet is still a novelty, but
Bruce Carlsmith, an analyst with NationsBanc Montgomery
Securities, predicts it will generate $2 billion in annual revenue
within four years and account for another $500 million in
equipment sales. Speaking at his firm's annual technology
investment conference this week, Carlsmith predicted that new
technology will soon give Internet calls better sound quality and
allow callers to use ordinary telephone handsets instead of their
computers. But Carlsmith warned that the big price advantage
Internet telephony now enjoys in the lucrative long distance
market could be wiped out if U.S. and foreign governments decide
to require Internet telephone companies to pay the same "local
access charges" as conventional long distance carriers.
