Phil - A long time ago, I first had a 8088 computer at home, and the difference between that and even a 286 was clearly noticeable (personally I miss the turbo switch). Flash to the present, my dinosaur Pentium 60 at home (over 3 years old) runs the current apps just fine (ex. Wordperfect Office Suite), I do not cringe at all running the 60 versus the computer at work, a Pentium Pro 200. Sure, the 200 is more capable, but by and large the 60 is still getting the job done.

The only reason I am considering upgrading the home computer is so I can play some of the latest games. The bottom line is that upgrading the hardware is becoming an option rather than a necessity for a lot of users, George's experience with Micron is a clear example.
