Dennis, Always hard to decide between fees, executions, and general reliability (how responsible the firm itself is). Still struggling with that I'm afraid. However, if your daily focus is trading, my own opinion is that you definitely need to go deep discount. If you are simply observing barriers to exit and entry that impact your buy and sell decisions negatively, probably you need to go to a discount firm. The full service firms are supposed to give research, advice, etc..., but maybe that is more marketing than we experience in a personal account. Sorry, I can't offer anything about Ameritrade. I'll probably switch one of my accounts over there to test the services. Please let me know if you go ahead and transfer funds, if you care to share your own experience with them.
