"It is/was always the MM manipulating the price." They were particularly "manipulating" in the days when stick prices were reported as $22 1/8 or $15 1/4, etc, compared to the "metric" reporting we see today. A very good book, "Day Trade Online", written by Christopher A. Farrell, showed how quite a good living could be made by trading $1/16 via the Bid-Ask spread .....
