This an admission that the Chromatic MPact processor is a disappointment, if not a failure. Modem operation was one of the many multimedia functions that was to be impemented by the original Mpact and Mpact 2 processors. And now they can't even do the modem part! They have to stick in somebody else's DSP! The graphics field is getting completely ahead of Mpact with 3dFX, 3DLABs, NVidia and Intel's i740, etc all going for mass market 2D/3D performance. Basically, my guess is that Chromatic and Mpact are headed for the big bit bucket in the sky. Or maybe National Semicompactor will buy them - they seem to like these dying companies - ask Fuchi!
